Another area that the school will be focusing on is the student's toileting rights. The school will need to ensure that the student has access to appropriate toileting facilities that will be wheel chair accessible. The school will also need to organise toileting assistance and monitoring to ensure that the student's is treated with dignity and respect. Below is a list of possible barriers that the student and school may face and a list of possible solutions to these barriers.
Barriers to inclusion- Toileting
There is no wheel chair assessible toileting facility.
At present, the student will need to use the staff toilets which is not safe and may be embarrassing, as it singles the student out as 'different.'.
The staff toilets are on the other side of the school, so using them may affect the amount of learning time that the student has.
For safety reasons, the student needs to be assisted by two student support officers while toileting.
Toilet monitoring will need to be assessed for student's safety.
DECD is in the process of orgainsing wheel chair accessible toileting facilities for the student to access. The toileting facilities will allow the student and the carer to safetly and comfortably fit within the toilet. The toileting facility will be big enough to provide showering and bathing along with a changing table and a storage cupboard.
The toileting facility will be positioned close the the other student's toilets to ensure the student's learning and play time is not affected with travel time to and from the toilets, and the location will not make the student feel isolated.
Student Support Officer will need to ensure there is another staff member that is able to assist with lifting the student and to monitor the toileting process, and meet the child safe procedures of the school.
The school will arrange a reporting system in which staff assisting with toileting will have to both sign and record the date and time.
Staff will be trained by 'Novita' on how to properly lift and toilet student. This will be updated yearly as the weight of the student affects the lifting styles.
School will provide staff with a toileting manual in which they are able to educate themselves on various toileting and lifting techniques they could use in various situations.
